AI is sending traffic. GA4 reports it as Direct.
Most AI-driven visits arrive with no referrer. Your Direct channel quietly fills with conversions you can't attribute, and the content driving them stays invisible.
What's actually happening
When ChatGPT cites your blog post, the user clicks through and lands on your site. By the time the click happens, the chat session has often discarded the referrer, or the AI surface stripped it. The browser sends a request with no Referer header.
GA4 has a single rule for that case: tag the session as Direct / (none). It looks like the user typed your URL — but they didn't. They came from an AI assistant that decided your page was worth recommending.
This isn't a small slice. As AI search adoption grows through 2026, we see customers where 40-60% of their Direct channel is actually AI-driven referral traffic. The content that's pulling those citations gets no credit. The marketer can't tell which articles are working in AI. Budget conversations fall apart because there's no number to point at.

How Wrenda fixes it
Wrenda already sees every AI bot fetching your pages. We use those server-side signals to model the hidden human traffic that follows.
- 01The Wrenda proxy logs every
ChatGPT-User,Perplexity-User,OAI-SearchBot,Claude-User, andCopilothit on every URL. - 02You connect GA4. We pull aggregated daily Direct + Organic + visible-AI referrer sessions, conversions, and revenue per page path.
- 03A nightly OLS regression fits a per-tier model: how many Direct sessions does each AI-bot hit predict? Tiers split by URL depth (homepage, depth-2, deep) so a deep blog post doesn't get diluted by homepage noise.
- 04The dashboard shows you visible-AI (the slice GA4 caught) and hidden-AI (the modelled slice it missed), with a confidence band so you know when to trust the number.
